The Privacy Office

The Privacy Office is a unit under UC Merced's Office of Campus Culture and Compliance (OC3). The Privacy Office is committed to the UC Privacy Principles of autonomy of individuals and free inquiry by faculty, students and staff. The Privacy Office strives to be a valued partner and advisor to all members of the campus community.  We also work with several different units across the campus community to protect the integrity of data collected, created, transmitted, released and stored by UC Merced and its affiliates, and partner with IT in the ongoing UC effort around strengthening our cybersecurity program.

UC Merced has established the Information, Privacy and Security Committee (IPSC). The IPSC is an advisory committee that advises OC3 and other units on issues of privacy, information and information security. The IPSC membership is varied and includes members from Information Technology, Legal Affairs, Risk Services, Student Affairs, the Office of Research and Economic Development, and Compliance.

The Privacy Office’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing privacy training and awareness;
  • Establishing and updating privacy policies and procedures;
  • Enhancing privacy protections across the campus community;
  • Providing guidance on compliance with privacy law and regulations;
  • Ensuring compliance with all privacy laws and regulations;

Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Deborah Motton serves as UC Merced’s privacy official. Please contact her at dmotton@ucmerced.edu or 209-383-8655 if you have questions or concerns about privacy in general or about the IPSC committee at UC Merced.
